Linda's Cookies

Recipeson March 28th, 2008No Comments

primary “What kind of cookies are these?” my father asked as he tapped the lightly browned baked good against his plate. My little teen-aged heart was crushed.

That hard round cookie-shaped thing he was tapping wasn’t a cookie but my first attempt at making biscuits. My mama had a way with biscuits. I didn’t.

Mama’s hand-formed biscuits would come out like little bits of Southern heaven (mine were like the other place). Every Southern meal had to have some bread in it, you know, or it wasn’t a Southern meal; it was just a snack.

So, in tribute to my mother (and my inspiring daddy), here is my biscuit recipe—the one I use now. Slightly adapted from my friend, the BHG New Cook Book.

Happily Even After
by Marilynn Griffith

Marriage, Motherhood and a Monster-in-Law.

What a cool tag line and story! How many times do women get caught up in trying to please other people instead of just sticking to being who they are? In the third and final book of the Sassy Sistahood series, author Marilynn Griffith tells a story many women can relate to with both giggles and tears. Tracey Blackman, a newlywed and now a mother seems to have it all except for a few minor issues. More like major issues! At the top of the list is Queen Elizabeth. read more

Between Two Worlds: The Spiritual Journey of an Evangelical Catholic

Nonfictionon March 21st, 2008No Comments

imageIntroducing the new blog alliance devoted to Non~Fiction books, Non~FIRST, a component of Fiction in Rather Short Takes (FIRST). This is our very first blog tour. Normally, we will post every 15th day of every month, featuring an author and his/her latest book’s FIRST chapter!

The special feature author is: Mike Timmis and his book: Between Two Worlds: The Spiritual Journey of an Evangelical Catholic (NavPress, February 2008)

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Mike Timmis had it all.

How does a kid from working-class Detroit become an international ambassador for Christ? And what motivated an evangelical-based ministry to choose this Catholic as its chairman? Mike Timmis’s inspiring life as a Catholic and evangelical leader reveals how our unity in Christ transcends the two worlds’ differences. From him, we learn how Catholics and evangelicals can go into an alienated world together as ministers of reconciliation and witnesses to God’s salvation and love.

Honorable Mention

WIP Updateson March 16th, 20081 Comment

I had a nice surprise today after a stormy weekend. The following message was in my inbox.

"Congratulations, Tyora! You’ve been chosen as one of the honorable mentions for your back cover blurb entry this week at Pix-N-Pens.

This was really encouraging to me because Tracy was only planning to pick one winner.  There were so many good entries, she chose two winners and two honorable mentions. I’m honored! :)

I have a lot of work ahead of me towards completing the When Rain Falls manuscript, but I have been working consistently each week on 2-3 chapters and I like how the story has progressed. It’s making more sense now! :)

I’ve learned quite a bit about writing compared to the draft I had this time last year. I  pray to have a strong manuscript by the spring.

Check out my back cover blurb and the others at Pix-N-Pens.  Let me know what you think.

Only Uni Only Uni
by Camy Tang

It’s a new year and Trish Sakai is ready to leave the past behind her. There’s a slight problem though, she’s still attracted to her ex-boyfriend Kazuo. More than anything, she needs to move on, but how can she when Kazuo continues to confess his love for her.

Trish’s grandmother, the no-nonsense matriarch of the family has determined it’s time for her single granddaughter to settle down and marry a good Japanese man. While her grandmother maybe well-intentioned, Kazuo is not a Christian and definitely not the man for Trish.
