BOOK REVIEW | Made of Honor
As soon as I received this book, I was excited about reading it. I have known Marilynn Griffith for a number of years and I knew from our emails she has quite the sense of humor.
“I, Dana Rose, do solemnly swear to say “I won’t” the next time someone asks me to be in their wedding party. My weak will has gained me a closet full of unflattering bridesmaids’ dresses in various sizes to accommodate my ever-fluctuating waistline.”
From the beginning pages, readers are in for a treat — that is a giggling session over the antics of Dana Rose. Poor Dana is a bridesmaid again to her dismay for the tenth time! With one of the members of the Sassy Sistahood, Tracy, getting married, Dana loses a roommate. Losing a roommate is not the only upheavel, Dana will face.
Finally leaving a job with a demanding boss, Dana strikes out on her own to start the business of her dreams. Unfortunately, her main supporter, her ex, owns a big-time show right across from her humble candle shop. Dana is convinced Adrian took the ideas that they shared as a couple to created the ultimate spa experience for women. Despite the competition and Dana’s denial, sparks are still there between Dana and Adrian.
There are quite a few characters in this novel. Some folks find it difficult to keep up with the various characters, but I think they provide depth to the main characer. The author has a way of moving the novel along at a pretty good clip. As soon as you start laughing about one situation, the author sends another one out of the blue that leaves you stunned. With the return of her long lost brother and back-stabbing younger sister, a struggling business, unhappy friends, Dana soons finds out she desperately needs her faith to hang in there.
At times, the reader may want to shake Dana or cheer her on. It is so obvious how Dana and Adrian feel about each other, but the relationship seems to crawl forward. As readers become familiar with Dana’s relationship with her family and friends, her weight woes and insecurities it is not hard to see how anyone can easily confine themselves to not seeking God’s best for themselves.
I really enjoyed getting to know Dana and watching her growth. While the focus is mainly on Dana, other members of the Sassy Sistahood, Tracy and Rochelle, are introduced to the reader. With this being a series, I’m looking forward to more stories surrounding these friends.
